Essential oils for an anxiety-free/pain-free dental visit!

The use of essential oils in dentistry

Essential oils have been used for different reasons for centuries. They are known for their calming effects after inhalation through which they travel directly to limbic part of our brain where anxiety, emotion, memory, heart-rate and blood pressure is controlled. For these reasons, many dental professionals recommend them for stress-free, pain-free dentistry and dental visit.

Aromatherapy, using essential oils, can play an important roll in controlling mood and reducing anxiety. According to a research project done by the American College of Healthcare Sciences , patients who received a hand massage using a mixture of the essential oils of bergamot C. aurantium var. bergamia, frankincense Boswellia carterii (Birdw.) and lavender Lavandula angustifolia (Mill.), reported less pain and depression.

Bergamot Oil

Another research done by the American College of Healthcare Sciences showed,  that weekly inhalation of bergamot oil for only 10 minutes helped teachers with high amount of stress with anxiety and also  lead to lower heart-rate and blood pressure.

Bergamot is commonly found in Earl Gery tea which we also provide in our dental office.

Bergamot was shown to reduce corticosteroid level and anxiety in rats in another research (2011).

When applied on skin, bergamot oil, can cause rashes and sunburn in the areas exposed to sun. Avoid sun exposure for 12 hours.

Lavender

Lavender is truly an amazing flower. I love the smell. I use the oil in my house every day and makes me feel very calm. It can help with balancing mood, healthy sleep and also pest control. We are going to use Lavender essential oil before your appointment to help you have a more peaceful and relaxing dental experience.

A study done in Austria showed that inhalation of orange and lavender odor reduced anxiety in a dental office. Another study done in 2003 showed showed the therapeutic effect of lavandula tincture in management of patients with mild to moderate depression who used 60 drops of lavender per day.

Frankincense

Frankincense is known for its effects on depression and anxiety through providing a calming and tranquil energy.

A study in Korea in 2008, found that Frankincense had a positive effect on pain, anxiety and depression on patients with end stage cancer.

Frankincense has been reported to help reduce inflammation, boost immune system and potentially help body to fight cancer.
